If I could go back in time and tell myself one thing before I started my Odd Journey, I would tell myself that people only buy one thing.
Improvement.
That’s it.
They don’t buy my ideas. They don’t buy my designs. They don’t buy my products.
They buy the idea of their life improving.
It doesn’t matter the industry. It doesn’t matter the niche.
People don’t buy things if they can’t see them improving their lives in some way.
And not every improvement is large.
I can buy a $1.29 pack of gum because I think it will improve my breath and gain acceptance from my wife (no more sleeping on the couch).
Or I can buy a $3,000,000 home in a nice neighborhood because it will improve my status.
The Improvements
And to make this even easier for you, we can narrow down the improvements into 6 categories:
- Wealth
- Health
- Sex
- Time
- Entertainment
- Status
If your thing doesn’t improve one of the items on the list, you need to start over.
However, you can tie almost anything to one of these items, making it a lot easier to make money.
The most important 3 are the first 3.
If you can get people more money, longer life, or more sex, they will gladly pay you money.
I call these The 3 Egos.
Time, entertainment, and status are kind of subcategories of the first 3.
If I have more time or gain more status then it usually means I can make more money.
Think of the stuff that you buy online from other people. Why did you buy it? I mean why did you REALLY buy it?
Because you believed it would lead you to one of those things on the list and the person selling it did a decent job of convincing you that it would get you one of those things.
If they’re really good they convinced you that it would get you more than one of those things!
The Center of the Universe
By knowing this you’ve unlocked all of the secrets to building an Odd Business or starting an Odd Hustle.
It’s the core of everything else that you’re going to learn and that’s why you’ve learned it first.
It allows you to look at your messaging (social media, videos, blog, emails, etc) and ask yourself if it’s painting a picture of improvement that the customer can believe in.
Your exercise today is simple. Go onto whatever social media app you like using and look at what people are selling.
Don’t look at the actual product. Instead, look at what improvement they’re selling.
Looking at Twitter you’ll find people selling:
- How to write online
- Copywriting
- How to grow your Twitter
- Landing page copy
- Using AI for social media
- Creating ebooks
But again, what are they really selling?
The improvement of more money.
People aren’t buying just because they want to grow their Twitter audience. They’re buying because they believe having a larger audience means more money for them.
And don’t worry, you don’t always have to make a direct connection between what you do and an Improvement. Most of them will do it on their own.
Just like you don’t have to tell me that losing 30 lbs of belly fat will increase my chances of living longer.
Now go take this new knowledge and see how others are using it out in the world.
